In an HDTV world, you want a direct access to the digital video stream coming from your provider (whether satellite or cable). You need to have a valid conditional access decoder. The easiest (and cheapest) way to do that is with a cable box or satellite receiver that has a built-in DVR. It would be hard for Apple to compete with that in a cost-effective manner. Leave the HD DVR to the cable company (or TiVo). (You'll notice that so far all the computer-based DVR programs for Mac or PC are standard-definition-only.
